The 74-inch reflecting telescope at the Sutherland station of the South African Astronomical Observatory. The telescope was originally at the Radcliffe Observatory outside Pretoria and upon its closing down in the early 1970's it was moved to its present location where it is currently the largest instrument on site. Although the telescope was ordered in August 1935 from Grubb, Parsons and Co of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, it was only completed in 1948 owing to the intervention of World War II. The cylindrical turret covering the telescope is 61 feet in diamater and the mirror is a 76-inch disk of pyrex from the Corning Glass Co. of New York State. The telescope is mounted on a 2 - pier asymmetrical mounting and most observing is done with the telescope east of the polar axis. The newtonian focus operates at f/4.85 with a plate scale of 22.49 arc sec per millimetre whilst the Cassegrain focus operates at f/18 with a plate scale of about 6 arc sec per millimetre. It can also be operated at f/50 with a plate scale of about 2.2 arc sec per millimetre. Scanned from a color photograph with a black and white scanner and artificially colored by GR
