The South African Astronomical Observatory outside the village of Sutherland as seen from the air and looking towards the south west. The turret of the 74-inch telescope is at left foreground whilst three domes may be seen running left to right and getting progressively larger , starting with the 20-inch reflector on the left, the 30-inch reflector in the middle and the 40-inch reflector at the right. Another two small domes may be seen lying perpendicular to the three already mentioned (below left centre) and these are the solar monitoring telescope run by the University of Birmingham , England, and the 30- inch APT telescope currently under construction. Other buildings on the observing plateau include a seismograph and a time service building as well garages for the observers cars. Just above centre can be seen a row of houses- these lie actually in a valley and cannot be seen from the telescope plateau- and these house resident staff ( non astronomers ).
