Caloris Basin

          The enormous Caloris Basin is thought to be similar to the large
circular basins found on Earth's Moon. Probably formed by a giant impact
early in Mercury's history, this basin was subsequently later filled by
lava flows. Its broad floor is laced by fractures and by sinuous ridges.
